Unclaimed Refund Finder — the 3-year window is closing

If you had tax withheld from pay but never filed, the IRS may be holding your refund. Under IRC §6511 you generally have 3 years to claim it — after that, the money is forfeited. A refund-year late filing carries no late-filing penalty when a refund is owed.

Tax year 2023 refunds — claim by April 15, 20270 days left
Tax year 2024 refunds — claim by April 15, 20280 days left
Tax year 2025 refunds — claim by April 15, 20290 days left

Dates come from the tax-year tables (the Update Engine), never from hardcoded prose. Start the non-filer check →

01 — Refund speed

How fast is a refund, really?

E-file + direct deposit

~21 days

The IRS's general guidance for most e-filed returns with direct deposit.

Paper return + direct deposit

Slower

The IRS must open, scan, and key in your paper return first.

Paper return + paper check

Slowest

Processing plus printing and mailing a check adds weeks.

Anyone promising your refund instantly is selling a loan. A loan is not your refund. It is repaid out of your refund — sometimes at 0% APR, sometimes near 36% APR. Read any “advance” offer as a loan, because it is one. How refund timelines really work →

“Typical” columns describe the market generally, in our own words — no competitor names, marks, or endorsements are used or implied. The free-filing eligibility range (roughly 37–52% of filers) is as published on the competitors’ own product pages, November 2026. If we ever get a row wrong, it goes in our public corrections log on the News page — that is the point of the last row.

04 — Know the risks

File anywhere else? Know the risks.

Wherever you file, the signature on the return is yours — and so is everything that follows from it. Four risks hide in most filing choices. They are not scare tactics; they are lessons from our teaching series, free for anyone to read.

The preparer who won’t sign

A “ghost” preparer charges cash, skips the PTIN signature, inflates the refund, and vanishes. The IRS holds the taxpayer responsible for every number on the return — signer or no signer.

Lesson #74 →

No second look

File once and never re-check, and missed credits stay missed. About 1 in 5 people who qualify for the Earned Income Credit never claim it — and nobody goes back for them before the 3-year window closes.

Get a Second Look →

The “instant refund”

An advance is a loan, repaid out of your refund. In the big storefront chains’ own published terms, that loan can run up to about 36% APR. Fast money is borrowed money.

Lesson #75 →

No source trail

A number you cannot trace to a source is a number you cannot defend in an audit. If a deduction isn’t documented, the IRS does not have to believe it happened.

07 — Good questions

Straight answers

Is Niptei Tax the IRS?

No. Niptei Tax is an independent company. We explain IRS rules in plain language, and we never claim IRS endorsement.

Can you e-file my return today?

Not yet. Our e-file provider application (EFIN) is in IRS review, and e-file opens only after IRS testing passes. Paper print-and-mail packets work today — including back years to 2016.

What does it cost?

The beta tools are free. Founding pricing will be announced to the beta list before any charge exists, and your price is always shown before you start — no checkout surprises.

Is my data safe?

We never store a full Social Security number. Documents live in a private vault, and your information is used only with your signed §7216 consent.
